Ancient Prayer Meets The Enneagram
This past July, my friend Carol Ann Gotch released her newest book, The Lord’s Prayer: A Path for Transformative Living Illuminated by the Enneagram.
Carol Ann and her husband David Walsh have been central to my enneagram learning and have helped me understand myself in ways that cannot be counted.
I owe both of them a great debt for helping me better understand the world and my place in it. This book contains almost 50 years of their experiences of teaching the enneagram and the deeper lessons we can all realize when we are open to receiving wisdom from things we do not understand.
What does this book have to do with the enneagram and the very Christian teaching of the Lord’s Prayer? Well, Carol Ann realized that the nine petitions of the prayer actually embody the spiritual work of each enneagram space. As a student of theirs, I was fortunate to receive their revelations and connections for the past 43 years and the opening up of the prayer in this way has helped me heal my own spiritual wounding that took place during my Catholic upbringing.
In Carol Ann’s unpacking of the prayer, she brings in the alternate translation of the Lord’s prayer from the original Aramaic. Author and historian, Neil Douglas-Klotz realized that the prayer that many Christians recite today is a translation from French, which was translated from Greek, which was translated from Hebrew, which was translated from Arabic. Klotz decided to go back to the original Aramaic to find the truest version of Jesus’s words. What he found was a very different interpretation of this prayer and each line of his translation helps inform Carol Ann’s new book. You may have noticed his translation above.
If you are a Christian, I recommend approaching Carol Ann’s new book with an open heart that is prepared for self-discovery.
If you are a student of the enneagram, you will find an incredible contemplative adventure in the unpacking of each of the enneagram spaces in a very new way. You will not find this wisdom in contemporary enneagram books.
